Scheduled monuments are Scotland’s nationally important sites. Gardens and designed landscapes are green spaces that play a big role in our heritage, national identity, nature conservation and well-being. Historic battlefields tell us much about the battles that have helped to shape our national consciousness and sense of identity. Marine heritage is as important to identify, investigate and protect as our heritage on land. Scotland’s six World Heritage Sites – from Neolithic Orkney to New Lanark – are outstanding for a diverse range of reasons. These are the designations that protect Scotland’s historic environment.
